Friday, December 2, we began our three weeks of studying the fear associated with the Advent season. Not to make you uncomfortable, but the Advent and Christmas story, as told in the Bible, is not warm and fuzzy tinsel and contentment. It is filled with reactions, responses, and sadly, despair. We started with the story from Luke 2:1-14, the classic Christmas pageant script used in the Charlie Brown Christmas story. Last week, we looked at the texts from Matthew 1:18-25 and Matthew 2:13-18 and realized there are healthy responses to fear, and fear can motivate us to action. For this last week of the study, December 16, the title of our topic is Do Not be Afraid. This is Mary’s story, from Luke 1:26-37. We’ll talk about our own fears, whether they are for our kids, ourselves, or the world. And we’ll talk about hope. And God’s presence in our lives, and God’s grace.
